Poverty, a disease of everyday life

From the beginning of time, poverty has been a part of man’s everyday life. In the 16th century, the fact that three quarters of the world were poor was largely acceptable. Poverty is usually defined by the lack of basic human needs. These include lack of a shelter, of a sanitation system, lack of access to drinking water, education and health care. According to the United Nations, the lack of two facilities described above is the definition of absolute poverty.

The state of poverty is widespread, but not exclusive, throughout Africa. Other states, which at first glance would not seem affected by poverty, suffer from this so-called ‘disease’ which is heavily encountered in India, China and Uzbekistan. Cultural and sometimes political barriers have stopped humanitarian efforts from intervening in this part of the world to reduce underdevelopment.

Often humanitarian efforts organized by a larger party need authorizations from the region’s executive power or, in some cases, from the government. One main cause of widespread poverty is the lack of industrialization, as industrialization creates workplaces and exportable goods, which subsequently increase income.

Lack of industrialization and infrastructural development in a state make the basic facilities such as schools and hospitals be scarce, making education and healthcare not reach common people. Poor health and education tend to affect productivity, thus industrialization reaches a stalemate and forms a vicious cycle in which it cannot develop because of low productivity and the people cannot be educated or given access to healthcare because the lack of industrialization‘s development.

Poverty drastically affects children’s success in school. These children, who have only a low amount of resources available for their education are more exposed to risks as juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy and child abuse. Maintaining a child’s education through school also increases a parent’s economical pressure. Poor children benefit a lot less from healthcare, this resulting in a great number of absences from the school. They are more likely to suffer from fatigue, flu, colds and hunger. Another cause of increasing absences is that children often have to stay around the house to do chores or to help the parents in their work.

Drawing a conclusion from the law of elasticity (present in economics) we can determine that when a product is released in large numbers to the public in a particular zone, its price goes down. The same can be said about the scarcity of a product, as its quantity goes down, the price goes up. When applied to a basic need, such as food, this law opens up our eyes about the real problem of ill-developed states: while the quantity of food is greatly reduced, the price is forced to go up. Most people living in such states have close to no income, spending a greater percentage of income to buy food than other people that live in more developed areas spend on their food.

Many people affected by poverty generate their income from agricultural activities. Most of them are so poor that they don’t even own the land they work upon and are forced to pay a part of what they manage to produce to the parcel’s owner. Their income varies from ‘little’ to ‘none’ and is greatly dependant on the weather, soil fertility and soil degradation, the latter reaching dangerously high levels throughout the world, affecting almost every state’s economical capabilities.

In other parts of the world, mostly remote, such as parts of South America and Africa, income can only be generated from mining operations, producing gold ore or the so called ‘blood diamonds’. These operations are often led by warlords who use them to fuel their own military forces or insurgencies. In many cases, these mining operations consist of a barbed wire fenced zone, which is protected by paramilitary troops meant to keep everybody in and everybody out, essentially making workers self-proclaimed slaves, people who, driven by poverty, take the chance in working in this kind of environment. These people are fed little food and offered an insignificant amount of money, that they can afterwards use to ‘buy’ their freedom, making their efforts close to meaningless as they have to raise enough to be liberated from the mining camp and to pay for whatever expenses they might encounter back in the freedom.

Countries like Somalia have gone through numerous wars and civil uprisings. These have actually robbed the country’s wealth and living conditions have slowly degraded, forcing people to take extreme measures to remain ‘above the line’. One of the consequences of poverty, together with an extreme measure, was the forming of the globally advertised ‘Somali pirates’. These are people that commit crimes as a living, robbing foreign marine vessels as they pass near the Horn of Africa, often taking the crew as prisoners and demanding a ransom from the hostages’ country.

Overpopulation is another issue present in ill-developed countries as birth control is inaccessible and, if accessible, its price is higher than anyone could afford. Overpopulation contributes to poverty reducing the income per family member, as there’s another mouth to feed. It also reduces the family’s economical capabilities as one parent has to take care of the child. The reverse, poverty being a cause for overpopulation, is also true: as men and women struggle to live day to day, they do not have the possibility of thinking about their future, and subsequently planning education or a career. This leads to the creation of another so-called ‘vicious cycle’.

Because of the lack of food and proper hygiene, infant mortality rates have gone sky-high, as the conditions in which the mother carries her pregnancy are often hostile and unwelcoming. Lacking food, the mother isn’t able to produce enough, if any, nourishment to feed the newborn child. As the world’s population has grown, the percentage of the population living on less than one dollar per day has been cut in half. This, however, isn’t the case for Africa, being the only part of the world where the aforementioned statistic has grown.

It is estimated that over a billion people go to bed hungry every night. Malnutrition and starvation contribute to the degradation of a human’s immune system, this is making them prone to a higher prevalence of suffering, at one time or another, from disease. It has been proved that iron and iodine deficiency can impair brain development. An estimated 40 percent of children under the age of 5 suffer from anemia due to lack of the aforementioned minerals in their diets. More than 10 million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday.

Infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and even AIDS are easily contracted among the poor, mainly because of inadequate sanitation and proper healthcare. Crowded living spaces and unhealthy working conditions help spread these diseases faster than they normally do. Many people suffering from poverty resort to selling their bodies for sex, this being an euphemism for prostitution. This occupation makes the poor more likely to be exposed to infectious diseases. Overwork, malnutrition and an inaccessible healthcare system hinders recovery, aggravating the disease. Asthma is a highly-encountered affliction throughout the poor.

Poverty isn’t something exclusive to ill-developed countries. It is present even in the most economically potent states; it exists in countries like France, Austria, Germany, the United States of America, Romania etc. Poverty is widespread in these types of states mainly because of discrimination and unequal spread of wealth. The most common form of discrimination found here is racial discrimination (towards people of African-American descent, Romani, Asian, Latino descent and so on).

This type of discrimination works against people when trying to get a job or benefit from a facility, as the employer may think of turning them down based on their heritage. Racism was born (together with hatred and fear) from the false belief that one race is better than another. Racism forced people to form communities inside communities, separating themselves though from the rest of the world clearly. Good examples of these are Asian China Town-type communities.

While ‘China towns’ are a good example of Asian people making a living and being able to sustain themselves, zones like slums and ghettos started appearing. These areas have little economical potential, most people living here resort to violence to make a living, the crimes vary from shop lifting to robberies to murder and trafficking. This doesn’t help the populace at all, giving the race in question an even worse reputation than it already had. All this develops, once again, into a vicious cycle, the poverty forcing people to break the law and thus greatly reducing employment chances for people belonging to that particular race.

There are forms of discrimination also frequently met in ill-developed countries, besides racism. The first one is caste discrimination, where one caste might consider another caste inferior and may proceed on demanding goods from the latter. Often, if the ‘higher’ caste’s desires are not met, pillaging can occur. This form of discrimination is prevalent in asian countries, mostly met in India.

Age discrimination is the second form of intolerance; it consists of younger people mocking and leaving out older people whom, they think, are unable to do a particular job as good as they did when they were younger. Gender discrimination is the third form of widespread discrimination in ill-developed countries, where it is believed that women don’t have the right to do a particular job or, in extreme cases, even to speak to someone else without their spouse’s approbation. This may, or may not, have been derived from the fact that, generally speaking, women don’t have a constitution as muscular as men have. This kind of discrimination is present even throughout better developed states where religion plays a great part of day-to-day life, such as Islamic states.

Needless to say, very few people suffering from absolute poverty have a roof over their heads, this is called homelessness. Slum dwellers make up for a third of the world’s population. These people end up living in a worse environment than rural people, the latter being the main focus of poverty throughout the world. Slums are characterized by urban decay, unemployment, illiteracy and high rates of poverty. They are regarded such as birth places for problems such as crime, alcoholism, drug abuse and suicide, much like the ghettos only a lot less organized. Many homeless people end up living in dumpsters, sewers, the so called ‘homeless people sanctuaries’, derelict buildings or even in structures made out of cardboard boxes.

Many of the children living in orphanages actually have a living relative who can take care of them, but they are often forced to join such an institution due to poverty. It is believed that orphanages actually harm children’s development by separating them for their families. Romania has the highest number of orphaned children in Europe. An investigation made clear that child’s rights are not usually implemented in a romanian orphanage. Humanitarian efforts have been made to improve the life of romanian children, for some good years missionaries from all over the world have been assigned to orphanages throughout Romania to help in any way they can.

One such example is Natalie Bridges, an American woman that decided to settle down in Bistrita, helping orphan children through organizing different programs such as “The After-School Program for Underprivileged Children”. She actually managed to settle a deal with a local dentist. This deal consisted of the dentist fixing the foster children’s dentures for free. Natalie even makes time one day per week to run an English conversation class at the local Center for Youth. She can be met during celebrations and fairs such as “Bistrita’s Days” dressed up as a clown, ready to entertain whomever stumbles upon her and will accept any help offered to increase the orphan’s quality of life.

In developed countries, such as European states, poverty is often a result of people ‘living above their means’, which actually means they acquire a high-priced good, sometimes taking out a loan, without actually needing it. In time they fall in debt and end up cutting expenses on day to day needs and thus lowering their living quality. If the aforementioned person doesn’t recover from his own ‘economical stall’ they’ll end up with the bank seizing their property, sometimes even reaching a debt so high that even their house is confiscated, forcing them to literally end up ‘living on the streets’.

If the loaner is not an institution such as a bank, but a loanshark, the punishment for not repaying the borrowed money is far greater than losing their home. They can end up losing family members, body parts and even their freedom, becoming ‘debt slaves’. Being a debt slave happens almost exclusively in ill-developed countries and, if you can’t repay the money during your lifetime, the debt will be passed on to future generations.

Often, in desperate need of money, people sell their offspring to strangers. This is also true in the case of indebted families which sell their children to clear their obligation towards the loaner. As this habit is illegal, the buyers can use the children as slaves, using them to complete chores, putting them through ordeals and even sexually abusing them. Often, these children become the subject of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a modern-day equivalent of slavery, it leads to debt slavery (described above), forced labor, sex trafficking and human organ trafficking.

Forced labor is a situation where the subjects, mostly poor people that that won’t be missed by anyone are kidnapped and forced to work against their own will. Their freedom is restricted and can include agricultural labor, sweatshop factory labor and, most widely encountered, begging. This type of begging is coordinated by some kind of organization that has formed a network of beggars which they send on the streets, expecting a minimum profit from each person under their control. They then collect all of the proceeds.

Sex trafficking is a situation where traffickers target vulnerable individuals such as refugees, drug addicts, homeless people and persons looking for a legitimate job in other countries. The sex traffickers’ most common tactic targeting young individuals is posing as agents offering job or education arrangements, promising an overall better life. In the end, the victims find out that they have been deceived and learn the true nature of the work they are expected to do.

Traffickers force their victims to become prostitutes or work in the sex industry, mainly meaning practicing prostitution, dancing in strip clubs, participation in pornographic movies and other types of involuntary servitude. Children can also be subjects of sex trafficking, leading to commercial sexual exploitation of them, being forced into prostitution or child pornography. It is estimated that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, between 200 and 400 thousand women from the Republic of Moldavia have been sold into prostitution abroad.

Drug abuse is prevalent throughout poor communities, it is a tool used by traffickers, otherwise known as ‘drug dealers’, to make people fall in a downward spiral, thus indebting any addicted victim of drugs. Any kind of addicting substance can be considered as a drug, be it alcohol, heroine or methamphetamine. Drug abuse and poverty prove to be, like other numerous aspects of poverty, cyclical by the fact that when an addict has no means to support his addiction, he will resort to illegal ways to obtain income. Drug abuse can result in a community sustaining the impact of acts such as stealing, prostitution, sexual assault or murder.

In conclusion, poverty exists due to hard to break vicious cycles, existing stereotypes, ignorance, human greed, poor decisions, due to the human need of proving that they’re better than others and sometimes, due to down-right laziness.

Romanian version here.

CPU – Intel Core i5 430M
RAM – 2x2GB DDR3
HDD – Western Digital 500GB
15.6″ WXGA display, integrated Intel HD Graphics, discrete 1GB ATI HD5470 graphics.
Misc: Wireless draft-n, 1.3mpx webcam, card reader etc.

The package also contained a 6-cell battery, 65W charger, certificates, driver CD, English manual, Romanian manual, Hindu manual etc.

It has a minimalistic look, the build quality is over average. The battery has a support peg on itself so the laptop is quite unstable if it’s removed. The lid is a fingerprint magnet, it also flexes ~0.2cms [~0.08 in] if pressed around the msi logo.

The CPU is based on the Nehalem architecture, being an Intel i5 430M, created using the new 32nm procedure, its frequency stays between 2.26 and 2.5 GHz. It also, if needed, underclocks itself to save battery. It has a DDR3-1066 memory controller and integrated Intel HD Graphics. Both are made using the 45nm procedure. [Give me a better word than 'procedure' and I'll use it]
We can also find two Kreton 2GB DDR3-1066 modules and a 500GB 5400rpm Western Digital HDD.
The WEI result is a 5.8, the HDD dragging it back.

It can seamlessly run HD movies, photo/movie editing applications. It can also run most games on medium-to-high details.
It has a 1366×768 15.6″ LED display. Visibility angles are good, no dead pixels here.

The keyboard is a chiclet keyboard and it’s ‘just another beauty’, it also has a numeric keypad.
The touchpad works fine using the W7 driver, nothing special about it. Above the display we can see a 1.3mpx webcam, good in high luminosity conditions but under average when we can’t get enough light, settings can be tempered with to give a better image.
The mic is situated in the right of the webcam.
The wireless works fine, having a full signal bar anywhere in the apartament [using a Cisco EPC2425 router].

The notebook has 3 USB 2.0 ports, one being an USB/eSata combo, it also has a VGA, an hdmi, a 3.5mm line-in and a 3.5mm line-out port. It also has an ethernet port and 34mm Expresscard slot. The charger plug is on its back.

The sound is delivered using two speakers, both situated in the front of the laptop. The frequency response is under average, one time somebody asked me if I listened to radio [he didn't notice the laptop in front of me]. Decent if you don’t have other speakers or headphones. The sound delivered through the 3.5mm port is strong and crisp.

Cooling-wise, when the integrated Intel graphics are on, the CPU stays around 30°C [86°F]. When the ATI discrete graphics are on, the CPU reaches just under 50°C [122°F]. The graphics card also reaches 70°C [158°F] yet the coolers do their job. The left part of the keyboard tends to heat up during high-cpu/gpu load, as the heatsink is just under it. Do not put your ethernet cable [or chocolate for that matter, I did it, not a pretty sight] in front of the exhaust, it gets extremely hot, the ethernet cable will dilate during high load. No performance drops were noticed during high-temps.

The battery’s lifetime is just under 3 hours in everyday office/wireless browsing using style.

The CD [and msi's website] includes w7 drivers [they also work on w7 x64], no errors during installation.

It’s a good notebook for its price, yet the speakers, webcam, glossy plastic and [sometimes] the warm-to-hot keyboard are drawbacks.

Procesor – Intel Core i5 430M
Memorie – 2x2GB DDR3
Stocare – Western Digital 500GB
Afisaj 15.6″ WXGA, accelerator grafic integrat Intel HD Graphics si accelerator grafic dedicat ATI HD5470

Carcasa e stabila doar in timp ce laptopul are bateria in el [are un piciorus de suport fix pe acumulator].

Tastatura cu taste indepartate (chiclet) e ‘just another beauty’, e o tastatura ‘intreaga’, avand si un numeric pad.
Touchpad-ul merge usor, driver incorporat in W7, in rest nimic special.

Sper sa-i fie de folos cuiva.

In before ‘hai ca te dai mare’.

PS: Daca are cineva propuneri de un laptop bag, let me know, am vrut sa-mi iau asta dar laptopul meu e cu 1cm mai lung decat compartimentul interior si nu vreau sa risc sa dau banii degeaba.

Avand in vedere ca ‘nick’-ul meu contine ‘k’ si ‘tz’, fiind evident derivat din cuvantul ‘colt’, majoritatea oamenilor isi fac o prima impresie cum ca as fi un agramat cu probleme de scriere si caruia ii e prea lene sa scrie corect.

Ironically, I’m quite the opposite of that.
It starts like this: cand aveam 10-11 ani am vazut un film, majoritatea se adresau unui personaj cu ‘Colt’, l-am preluat.

Am avut o perioada in care daca nu imi scria cineva corect in mail-uri, mesaje personale pe forumuri sau chiar in IM-uri nici nu ma oboseam sa-i raspund pentru ca ii consideram inferiori [me and my big head].

In another order of ideas, urasc stereotipurile adresate metal-ului.
